Life is full of ups and downs for everyone. Sometimes it feels that disappointments happen far too often, outnumbering the good times. But the way we react to the bad times is very important and can have a major impact on our overall happiness. Dwelling on disappointments can lead to a downward spiral of negative thinking, negative behaviour and further negative consequences.
Allow yourself to feel your disappointment but take the time to look at it objectively as well. Were the causes of the disappointment outside your control or did it happen because of something you did or didn’t do? If they were beyond your control, acknowledge your feelings then choose to let them go, safe in the knowledge there was nothing you could have done to alter the outcome. If your actions influenced the disappointment, acknowledge your feelings and then focus your energy on deciding how you can do things differently in the future to bring about a positive outcome next time. This way you can take back control over your life and start to build yourself a happier future.
